Flipboard Update Adds Support For Instagram’s New Video Feature

A couple of days ago, Flipboard received an update that brought a couple of minor improvements along with the usual bug fixes and performance optimizations. As it turned out, though, that same update also brought a notable change involving Instagram‘s recently launched video feature.

As noted by The Next Web, Flipboard has been updated with support for videos shared from Instagram. Now, the popular social-magazine app is able to display videos from the popular photo-sharing and video-sharing social networking app.

For some reason, the addition of this enhancement was not included in the changelog of Flipboard’s latest update. What did get included are the following:

-Reminder: Log in to Google Reader on Flipboard on or before June 30th to save your feeds and folders.

-Now you can share to Twitter and Facebook when sharing to your magazines.

Flipboard is available in the App Store for free. The app also received an update earlier this month that gave users the ability to co-curate magazines.

Instagram’s video feature was launched by Facebook just last week, obviously in response to Twitter’s Vine. Not unexpectedly, Instagram’s video shares to Twitter, and presumably across the web in general, have increased at the expense of Vine’s.

Great Ways to Use QR Codes for Marketing

1) QR Codes on business cards.
OK, not the most creative idea ever. In fact, this is probably the de facto way many businesses use QR codes. Rather than overload a business card with all of your contact info you could include the bare minimum for reaching you, then create a QR code that leads people to your Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Flickr, Plaxo, Yelp, FourSqure, Digg, Delicious, StumbleUpon, Whrrl, and MySpace profiles. Little muss, little fuss.

2) Scavenger hunts.
Again, for some reason this appears on every list of QR code marketing ideas. Probably because scavenger hunts are fun and engaging, although a lot easier to write about than to administer. Still, for destination marketing, a scavenger hunt approach can be a great way to get visitors to check out places they might not otherwise go.

3) Labeling.
Somewhere, a restaurant patron is enjoying wine from your vineyard. They notice the QR code on the bottle and quickly scan it. That takes them to a mobile site where they can learn more about your wine, your vineyard, and links to where you can buy a case for delivery…all before the check comes.

4) Storefront displays.
Few retail businesses are open 24/7. Don’t (fully) disappoint potential customers after you’ve left for the day. Create a Shop Online Now! QR code and put it in your storefront window. One quick scan and you’ve turned a potential lost sale into an online customer who’s going to share a lot more of their contact information with you.

5) Promotions, discounts and giveaways.
If you want to encourage patronage from the iPhone and Android set, you could create discounts that are specific to the QR codes. You could run these codes in advertisements or post them throughout your store. You could even turn them into a “retweet” so that your shoppers share their discount with their followers.

6) Get funky with your QR Code design.
QR codes allow a little wiggle room, meaning that you can “hack” the code itself. A famous, early example is the BBC’s QR Code. However, you can play around with the QR code once it’s been generated in an image editing tool like Photoshop and work in your own logo or brand. Always be sure to test your QR code before printing up a few thousand copies, however.

7) Use QR codes to get Likes and Follows.
You can create mobile-friendly landing pages with Facebook like buttons or lead them to your Twitter page for a quick follow. The name of the game is engagement, so a like or follow can create a long-term marketing opportunity. Caveat: so far the Like buttons that QR tags generate lead to the Facebook website rather than the mobile app. I don’t know about you, but I rarely log into Facebook’s website from my phone, so that requires extra steps the average person may not be willing to take.

8) Supplement your retail space.
QR codes next to pieces of art could help art galleries move more art, or museums replace those aging audio tape tours. Hardware stores could link to how-to videos on YouTube of how to use specific power tools. Groceries could link to pages that talk about how their products were sourced, and perhaps to interviews of the farmers who grew the food. Electronic shops could bring visitors to review sites so they could get unbiased reviews of stocked products. Or to an e-commerce site where shoppers could buy out-of-stock items. Book stores could link to their own reviews of books on their blog.

9) Increase e-commerce sales.
Since QR codes can lead to URLs, you can create a code that will populate a shopping cart with specific products. (Assuming your e-commerce solution can handle that.)

10) Build your email subscriber list.
Use your QR code to send people to your email signup. Just make sure you give people a compelling reason to subscribe to your list…otherwise you will have just wasted their time. Not the best way to engage your audience.

11) Get the phone ringing.
QR codes can also make a phone call. (Oh, imagine the mischief!) If you want to get the phones ringing–at your business or at campaign headquarters – you can create a code that will dial a predetermined number. Likewise, QR codes can generate SMS text messages.

As you can see, there are plenty of ways to use QR codes to connect and engage your audience. QR codes can provide additional information, including photos, reviews, directions and event dates and times. There’s a certain amount of fun and surprise with QR Codes, so that you can take advantage of a “what’s behind door number one” mentality.

Facebook Announces New Launcher Service For Android Phones

It’s easy to make fun of Facebook FB +3.12%. The depressed stock, the misguided political comments, the unguarded vanity of high school “friends”—all tend to reinforce the inanity of the social network.

But a billion people still use it. Even those who complain (like me) still use it. And for large, multinational companies, it’s becoming an increasingly valuable tool for recruiting employees.

Work4, previously known as Work4 Labs, has been on our radar since the fall. Run by CEO Stephane Le Viet, a 33-year old Frenchman, the San Francisco-based company helps companies like Pepsi, Gap and Oracle recruit for entry-level and hourly positions via Facebook. For the moment, it seems to be working.

The company has posted 6 million jobs through its clients’ Facebook pages. Facebook itself began using the company to fill positions two weeks ago. “That pretty much killed any competitive threats we could’ve faced,” Le Viet laughs. BranchOut, a company that previously competed in the space, pivoted away from it last fall. Companies like Identified and Jobvite still offer competing tools.

Monthly revenue at Work4, meanwhile, is doubling year-over-year. The company is on pace to make between $5-$10 million in 2013, up from “low millions” last year.

For an 86-person company though, that still implies a serious burn-rate. Le Viet counters that developers in France, where Work4 headquarters its tech team, cost 1/3 of those in the U.S. after tax subsidies. And 26 of the company’s 86 employees are interns (whoa). Still, Work4 intends to raise more cash next year. It last raised $11 million in a Series A round led by Matrix Partners in September.

Work4′s enterprise package starts at $10,000 annually, but increases as companies add features. Multinationals that maintain unique Facebook pages in different countries pay the $10,000 fee for each page. (Intel INTC -0.22%, for example, pays for 11 different pages.) Small businesses can use a free service, but when they pay to advertise the openings through Facebook, Work4 takes a 25% cut.

Since Work4′s enterprise business continues to generate nearly all of its sales, I asked Le Viet why he even bothers to target small businesses. “We spend a lot of time thinking about how to align as much as possible with Facebook,” he answers. Local, he explains, is a huge priority for the social network, so Work4 intends to continue working in that area regardless of the immediate ROI. Smaller customers are also helpful in terms of testing new services and features.

That strategy illustrates the company’s current reliance on Facebook, something it is eager to mitigate going forward. It recently released a tool for recruiting through Twitter and intends to introduce a product for Pinterest in the coming months. A Facebook-oriented version of LinkedIn LNKD -1.64%‘s popular Recruiter tool is also in the works. Le Viet’s vision: “Social recruiting software for the enterprise.”

What is Siri? And Does Siri Have Competitors?

f you own a recent iPhone or iPad, you know what Siri is.  For those who don’t, we’re going to briefly explain Siri, including what it does, and some alternatives to Siri.

Siri is the name of a module for voice commands on Apple devices.  Siri lets you control the iPhone with your voice.  You can ask Siri questions using your voice — without typing.  Siri answers in a human-sounding voice, also.

You can use Siri to search the Web, send emails, find text messages and read them to you out loud, post social media updates, make phone calls, and even set up appointments or reminders.  You can also use Siri as a dictation device to dictate notes you want to remember.

Because of those types of activities, Apple calls Siri a “personal assistant.”  Siri is built into recent-model Apple devices so there is nothing for you to download.  It’s already available.

Apple says that you don’t need to talk slowly or pronounce things carefully — you can speak in a natural voice.  There’s no need to “teach” it — although like most voice recognition programs it does get better the more you use it, as it does learn to recognize your speech patterns.

Siri was launched with a media campaign that featured Samuel L. Jackson in one commercial (embedded below).  At first, while Siri was still a novelty, people wrote about it and used it.  But after a while, the romance with Siri soured.  people found that it wasn’t 100% accurate.  One report put accuracy at under 70% in delivering correct responses.

The way it works is that your requests and commands to Siri are uploaded to Apple servers somewhere, interpreted, and then a response comes back to you.

Some companies, like IBM, at one point banned Siri on privacy and security grounds, because it’s not clear what happens to the queries and whether they are saved by Apple.

There are alternatives.  These are considered two of the best:

Google Mobile Search for Android – Google has voice activated search for Android devices.  You can request a variety of things.

Dragon Mobile Assistant – By Nuance Communications, the makers of Dragon voice activated software, comes this mobile assistant.

Our take:  while Siri and other mobile assistants hold promise, they aren’t at the point where they can be relied upon 100% of the time with 100% accuracy.  However, if you are looking for a way to be more productive in your daily work, these mobile assistants can cut down time.
